Food Allergen

A food allergy reaction occur when your immune system overreacts to a food or a substance in a food. Some people are allergic to certain types of food especially children.

Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to two hours after taken the offending foods. The most common food allergy signs and symptoms include itching or eczema, sneezing, nasal congestion and scratchy throat.

Chilled or frozen food

Wheat

Foods or ingredients that may contain wheat: bread, gluten, flour, starch, bran, crackers, cookies or noodles.

Fresh milk and other dairy products

Eggs (eggs and egg products)

Foods or ingredients that may contain eggs: boiled eggs, fried eggs, egg sandwich, cakes, cookies, bread, noodles, pasta or mayonnaise.

Raw meat, fish, poultry and seafood

Milk (cow’s milk and dairy products)

Foods or ingredients that may contain cow’s milk: fresh milk, cheese, yogurt, cream, butter, milk powder, cookies or bread

Fruits and vegetables

Soy and soy contained products

Foods or ingredients that may contain soy: soy milk, tofu or beancurd, soya flour, sauces, desserts, cereal or vegetarian products

 

Meat, fish or poultry

Peanut

Foods or ingredients that may contain peanut: cooking oil, sauces, cakes, bread, desserts, peanut butter or peanut flour

Canned food

Tree Nuts (walnut, hazel, cashew, pistachio, pine nut or almond)

Foods or ingredients that may contain tree nuts: bread, crackers, chocolates, ice-cream, nut oil or sauces.

Expiry date

Shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster, oyster or scallops)

Foods or ingredients that may contain shellfish: Fresh seafood, seafood sauces, seafood meat products, seafood soup, seafood porridge or steamboat

Grocery shopping tips for food allergic people

  • Check carefully ingredients label for allergen information
  • Always check the ingredient statement on the product label
  • Look for “Contains” or “May contain” warnings on the ingredient statement
  • Example of chocolate allergen statement:
    Allergen Statement: Contains Milk and Soy. May contained traces of Wheat, Egg, Peanuts and Tree Nuts.
  • Check ingredient label, for example Gluten Free (Wheat) or Soy Free (Soy).
